TURBOS. My Porsche GT2 had 670 horse out of it 3.6L with very minor modifications on the factory engine. The GTR is of course a twin turbo motor also and the 4.2 R8 is normally aspirated. Despite Audi's claimed 20 hp advantage in the 40V, I found the 32V more willing to rev, the throttle was a lot more responsive too. It's been the same with all 40V S8's I test drove before settling on mine. The 32V also has solid tappets for the exhaust valves, which would probably account for the gruffer V8 rumble. Valvetrain is lighter.
